First Constipation Symposium in Kurdistan Held in Sulaymaniyah

Given that constipation is one of the common health issues affecting various age groups and different conditions, the First Constipation Symposium in Kurdistan was organized on February 15, 2024, in collaboration with the College of Medicine at the University of Sulaymaniyah, the General Directorate of Health in Sulaymaniyah, the Kurdistan Liver and Gastroenterology Association, and the Health Awareness and Education Center. The symposium aimed to enhance knowledge levels and establish guidelines that could be implemented in Kurdistan and the region.

The symposium commenced with the distribution of certificates of appreciation to several doctors who played important roles in organizing the event, as well as to the Liver and Gastroenterology Association and the College of Medicine.

During the symposium, all potential causes of constipation were discussed, including: various diseases (intestinal diseases, conditions related to the digestive system, etc.), dietary factors, imbalance of gut microbiota, post-surgical constipation, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and several other contributing factors.

The symposium addressed chronic constipation, methods for diagnosing the condition, and treatment approaches.

Radiology was discussed as one of the diagnostic methods for identifying the condition, along with various other diagnostic approaches.

Beyond the topic of constipation, due to its significance and increasing prevalence, "colorectal cancer" was also addressed during the symposium. Unfortunately, its incidence has increased compared to previous years, particularly among individuals aged 25-50 years. This topic covered early detection through various methods and "the role of artificial intelligence" in screening as a promising future diagnostic tool. Treatment options for the condition were also discussed.

The symposium covered constipation during pregnancy, postpartum, in breastfeeding women, as well as constipation in children, including its causes and treatments.

Regarding treatment approaches, the importance of exercise, dietary considerations, probiotics for balancing gut microbiota, various medications, and surgical interventions as a final treatment option were discussed.
